Reading Comprehension

An “apple polisher” is one who gives gifts to win friendship or special treatment. It is not exactly a bribe, but is close to it. All sorts of people are apple polishers, including politicians and people in high offices — just about everybody. Oliver Cromwell, the great English leader, offered many gifts to win the support of George Fox and his party, but failed. There are other phrases meaning the same thing as “apple-polishing”—”soft-soaping” or “buttering-up”. A gift is just one way to “soft-soap” somebody, or to “butter him up”. Another that is just as effective is flattery, giving someone high praise — telling him how good he looks, or how well he speaks, or how talented and wise he is. Endless are the ways of flattery. Who does not love to hear it? Only an unusual man can resist the thrill of being told how wonderful he is. In truth, flattery is good medicine for most of us, who get so little of it. We need it to be more sure of ourselves. It cannot hurt unless we are carried away by it. But if we just lap it up for its good value and nourishment, as a cat laps up milk, then we can still remain true to ourselves. Sometimes, however, flattery will get you nothing from one who has had too much of it. A good example is the famous 12th century legend of King Canute of Denmark and England. The king got tired of listening to the endless sickening flattery of his courtiers. They overpraised him to the skies, as a man of limitless might. He decided to teach them a lesson. He took them to the seashore and sat down. Then he ordered the waves to stop coming in. The tide was too busy to listen to him. The king was satisfied. This might show his followers how weak his power was and how empty their flattery.

31. Which of the following activities has nothing to do with “apple-polishing”? A.A boy tells his girlfriend how pretty she looks.

B.An employee tells her boss how good he is at management. C.A knight is said to be of limitless power by his followers. D.A teacher praises her students for their talent and wisdom.

33. What does the writer want to prove with Cromwell’s example? A.Everybody can be an apple polisher. B.Cromwell was not a good apple polisher.

C.There are people who don’t like being apple polished. D.George Fox and his party were not apple polishers.

34. Whom does the writer think that flattery can do good to? Explain it.

Flattery can do good to those who get so little of it.Because they need to be more sure of themselves and it cannot hurt unless they are carried away by it.

What makes Americans spend nearly half their food dollars on meals away from home? The answer lies in the way Americans live today. During the first few decades of the twentieth century, canned and other convenience foods freed the family cook from full-time duty at the kitchen range. Then, in the 1940s, work in the

wartime defense plants took more women out of the home than ever before, setting the pattern of the working wife and mother. Today about half of the country’s married women are employed outside the home. But, unless family members pitch in with food preparation, women are not fully liberated from that chore. Instead, many have become, in a sense, prisoners of the completely cooked convenience meals. It is easier to pick up a bucket of fried chicken on the way home from work or take the family out for pizzas or burgers than to start opening cans or heating up frozen dinners after a long, hard day. Also, the rising divorce rate means that there are more single working parents with children to feed. And many young adults and elderly people, as well as unmarried and divorced mature people, have been alone rather than as part of a family unit and don’t want to bother cooking for one. Fast food is appealing because it is fast, it does not require any dressing up, it offers a “fun” break in the daily routine, and the expense of money seems small. It can be eaten in the car — sometimes picked up at a drive-in window without even getting out — or on the run. Even if it is brought home to eat, there will never be any dirty dishes to wash because of the handy disposable wrappings. Children, especially, love fast food because it is finger food, no struggling with knives and forks, no annoying instructions from adults about table manner.

35. It can be inferred that children______. A.want to have more freedom at table B.never wash dishes after meal

C.like using knives and forks while eating D.take eating time as a fun break

36. People who live alone prefer not to cook at home on the ground that______. A.they are too busy working to think of cooking

B.they consider cooking for one person is too troublesome C.they think eating outside from time to time is enjoyable D.they want to share every meal with the friends

37. The expression “pitch in with” in Paragraph 3 probably means______. A.complain B.enjoy C.help D.deny

38. Why do Americans enjoy fast food?

Americans enjoy fast food because it is fast,it does not require any dressing up,it offers a“fun”break in the daily routine.and the expense of money seems small.

The term blue collar job typically refers to a job that involves manual labor and receives an hourly rate of pay rather than an annual salary. The term blue collar stems from the uniforms worn by many industrial workers that were typically made of heavy duty, blue fabric and consisted of blue shirts and pants or blue coveralls. The automotive manufacturing and repair industries as well as the construction industry have been referred to as blue collar for decades. Though a blue collar job was once thought to be reserved for people with no education or skill who were seemingly only qualified to perform manual labor, the defining qualities of a blue collar job no longer fit in some industries. For example, many computer and high tech jobs pay by the hour and some construction industry positions pay an annual salary. In modern times, a blue collar job may also require education for a number of positions, which are categorized as “skilled trades. “ People who have traditionally held a blue collar job are referred to as blue collar workers. The stereotype and social class of the blue collar worker has changed over the years. This is due in part to the increase in technology, which requires training, and the increase in pay among some industries. Blue collar jobs within some industries have seen a decline, especially in the manufacturing industries, as the manual labor within the industry has become outsourced at an increasing rate. Construction, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning), and automotive repair remain leading industries offering blue collar jobs in America.

Many laws seem to be created for the purpose of protecting people from themselves. Some examples are age limits for off-road vehicles, seat-belt requirements for cars, and wearing a helmet when riding a motorcycle. Opponents of these laws feel that their rights are being restricted. If it doesn’t hurt anyone else, why should there be a law? But if they become injured, it can raise insurance rates for everyone. Similarly, consider people putting aside money for their retirement. Suppose they work for a fast-growing company, the hot new stock pick. Many employees invest heavily in the stock. The stock price plummets, their savings will disappear. Laws preventing people from having too much company stock in their retirement accounts could protect them from financial disaster. It isn’t easy to find the proper balance between individual rights and common good. Some people will think that the new law goes too far, while others will complain that it doesn’t go far enough. Although we may not agree with every law, some minor inconveniences are part of living in our society.

43. What do the opponents think of such laws as age limits for off-road vehicles?

A.They think these laws can protect them perfectly. B.They think these laws raise the insurance rates. C.They think these laws violate their rights. D.They think these laws are too old.

第二段第一句中的these laws指代第一段第二句中的age limits for off-road vehicles,seat-belt requirements for cars,and wearing a helmet when riding a motorcycle。结合feel that,their rights are being restricted可知,这些法律的反对者们认为它们限制了自己的权利,故答案为[C]项。

price plummets, their savings will disappear.

A.increases to a higher level B.falls down to the ground C.drops dramatically D.moves up and down

45. Why do laws prohibit people from having too much company stock in their retirement accounts?

A.Because the company will be in danger if its employees have too much company stock.

B.Because the employees will be in possible financial crisis if the company is not well run.

C.Because there will be an accident in the stock exchange.

D.Because there will be not enough stock for all the employees.

46. What is the author’s attitude toward the laws?

The author thinks the laws are necessary.

time. If you have just a few days, you may want to study for several hours every day. If you have a few weeks, you can go in a slower pace and study for one or two hours every day. Your plan should be viable. Once you have made it, you should stick to it, so don’t make a plan that you can’t actually follow. Secondly, you can try to improve your lifestyle. Try to live a healthy life: get enough sleep, do exercises, eat healthy food, and avoid drinking and smoking. Your performance in everything, including studying, will be better if your body is in a good condition. You can also practice deep breathing, which is a great way to calm yourself down and help you to concentrate. If your test is really close to take, there are still things you can do. You should still make a study plan, even if it’s just reading for 20 minutes during lunch break. This can not only help you prepare for the test, but also help you feel more confident. You should also be prepared for what might happen during the test. What if I freak out? What if I get so nervous I can’t remember a single thing I’ve studied? First of all, you should understand that it’s totally normal to get anxious. It doesn’t have to mean that you are inadequate, because it can happen to anyone. When it happens, don’t tense up or fight against it. Just take a deep breath and focus on calming down. After you calm down, try to remember successful things you did in the past and the time you have spent preparing for the test. This will give you confidence. The key to reduce anxiety is to be prepared, both mentally and physically. These are what I do to reduce anxiety, but everyone may have their own tricks, so it’s also good to ask people for advice. But don’t just try every trick you learn, because you may end up wasting too much time and getting even more anxious. Prepare yourself, and you will find the way that suits you the best.
