Experts say that students usually need eight to ten hours’ sleep at night, but most Chinese students do not get enough sleep. Some Chinese parents are usually glad to see their children studying late. They will think their children work very hard, but not all parents are happy about this. Once a mother told us that every morning her 10-year-old boy put up one finger with his eyes still closed, begging (请求) for one more minute to sleep because he didn’t get enough sleep at all. Like thousands of students “early birds” in China, he has to get up before six every
4
morning.
A report shows that without a good night’s sleep, students seem to be weaker than they should be. Many students have fallen asleep during class. Too much homework is not the only reason why students stay up late. Some watch TV or play the computer games late into the night.
Experts have said that the students should develop good study habits. Sleeping less does not mean working hard. Some clever students never study too late, but they are still able to work well in class.

It was a Christmas night. I was an unlucky nurse because I had to work on such a beautiful festival. When I was complaining (抱怨) about it , three people appeared at my desk - a tired woman and two children.
“Are you all sick?” I cannot believe them because they seemed all right.
“Yes,” the woman answered weakly and kept her head down.
But when they started to show me their problems, things became unclear. One child had a fever, but his temperature was OK. The other child had an earache, but she could not tell me which ear hurt. It seemed that the mother was pretending(假装) to cough.
Something was wrong. But I only explained that it might take a while before a doctor could meet them. “Take your time, please,” said the mother. I checked their information paper - no address. Suddenly I knew, they were homeless while the hospital was warm.
The family huddled(蜷缩)together under the Christmas tree, smiling and talking with each other sweetly. Quietly, I went back to the nurses’ station and told them what happened in the waiting room. It was just like God sending us a gift on Christmas Day. The nurses’ station suddenly came back to life. All the nurses went into action for “a Christmas emergency(急诊)”.

On Sunday, the Chinese women's volleyball team beat the Serbian team in the Rio Olympics' volleyball final and got a gold medal for the country. At the same time, the team regained the spirit to fight for higher goals (目标)-similar to the Olympic motto of faster, higher and stronger.
Although this is the second Olympic success of the Chinese women's volleyball team in 12 years, during an important five years they won the gold in all major
world competitions. Most Chinese still remembers the 1980s. That’s when the country celebrated the courage, endurance (耐力) and fighting spirit of Chinese women volleyball players.
The women volleyball players' spirit went far beyond sports. Because of the women players' endurance and fighting spirit, Chinese people started believing their country could catch up with other developed countries in many ways in the near future. And such a spirit and belief helped make China the world's second-largest economy.
In sports, skill is important. But sometimes endurance-the strength to continue-is more important than skill, especially when the opponents (对手) are equally skillful.
At the start of the Rio Olympics' volleyball competition, China lost to Serbia and the Netherlands. Few believed the Chinese women could go very far. But they beat Brazil in the quarterfinals (四分之一决赛) and the Netherlands in the semis, before beating Serbia in the final.
Coach Lang Ping has put the courage into the team. That courage has helped it to create such a miracle (奇迹). Will the women volleyball players rekindle (重燃) the spirit of the 1980s among the people? Let's wait and see.
