Guangzhou is the capital and the sub-provincial city of Guangdong Province in the southern part of the Peoples Republic of China. The city is also known by an older English-language name, Canton. It is a port on the Pearl River, navigable to the South China Sea, and is located about 120km north-west of Hong Kong. As of the 2000 census, the city has a population of 6 million, and a metropolitan population of 12.6 million,making it the most populous city in the province and the third most populous metropolitan area in China.

With the Guangzhou Metro, opened in 1999, Guangzhou is the fourth city in China to build an underground railway system. Currently there are four lines operational with an ambitious plan to expand rapidly with three lines under construction and four lines that are being planned.

Guangzhous main airport is the New Baiyun International Airport in Huadu District, that opened on 5 August 2004 replacing old Baiyun International Airport close to the city centre.

My hometown and Guangzhou are different in many ways. Firstly, people in Guangzhou speak several languages. For example, local citizens speak Cantonese, and the immigrants speak Mandarin. Secondly, people in my hometown are selfish, because they only care about their own benefits. But people in Guangzhou are much more generous. They are willing to help others when people are in trouble.

Thirdly, Guangzhou is in the south of China. With Pearl River running across the city, Guangzhou enjoys a warm and wet climate. While my hometown is deep in the mountains, and the weather is so changeable. Sometimes its as cold as winter, and sometimes its as hot as summer in a day, which make me feel so irritated.

Besides, the food in my hometown is too hot and spicy. But Cantonese food is much lighter. Its neither too salty nor too light.

Finally, the environment in my hometown is polluted seriously, because of the tail gas emitted by private cars. And the waste gas and water from factories is also a main cause of pollution.
