Varying Talking Speed Adds Meaning Being able to speak quickly creates interest in what you’re trying to say. President Reagan often spoke at only eighty to one hundred words per minute, but he was listened to. So speed is not all there is to consider. But there are more changes in tone, variety of facial expression and believability about people who vary their speaking speed. Faster talking communicates interest and excitement while slower talking emphasises a point, showing that you’re taking the time to be careful and precise. Being able to talk at two hundred words per minute does not mean that you must talk at that speed, but it does allow you to when you want to. If you do then the people you’re talking with may too! Native speakers of a language can use longer sentences with more complex vocabulary and precise word use when they speak slowly and tend towards short, basic vocabulary, simple grammar and present tense when they speak faster.

A lot of emphasis is placed on intelligence measured by tests. M: The so-called IQ tests? F: Yes. Basically they are intended to test linguistic and numerical skills, so some children are bound to suffer. This is very unfortunate. A child with an average IQ may turn out to be successful when he grows up. . M: What you’re saying is that some children have abilities that are not easy to measure, that aren’t appreciated. F: Precisely. And if these skills are not spotted sufficiently early, they cannot be developed. That’s why, in my view, there are so many unhappy adults in this world. They are not doing the things they are best at. M: I see. F: But at school, only those children who are good with words and numbers, they probably do well in school examinations. M: Right. Is there anything a parent can do to help in this case? F: Yes. In my opinion, a child should be judged on his individual talents. After all, being happy in life is putting your skills to good use, no matter what they are.
8. The basic purpose of IQ tests is to______. A.measure children’s intelligence B.test linguistic and numerical skills
C.test why some children perform better at school D.find out why some children are not appreciated

C.are not doing the things they are best at D.are not duly encouraged in life
10. According to Brigid, some children can’t do well in school examinations because_____.
A.they don’t have proper education
B.they don’t have enough encouragement C.their parents are not responsible
D.they are not good with words and numbers

D.Being happy in life is being good at everything.
对话提到“you’re saying is that some children have abilities that are not easy to measure”,因此B项符合原意。
SECTION B PASSAGESDirections: In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.
We have no idea about when men first began to use salt, but we do know that it has been used in many different ways throughout history. For example, it has been recorded in many history books that people who lived over three thousand years ago ate salted fish. Thousands of years ago in Egypt, salt was used to preserve the dead. In some periods of history, a person who stole salt was thought to have broken the law. Take the eighteenth century for example. If a person was caught stealing salt, he would be thrown into prison. History also records that only in England about ten thousand people were put into prison during that century for stealing salt! About four hundred and fifty years ago, in the year 1553, if a man took more than his share of salt, he would be thought to have broken the law and would be seriously punished, and his ear would be cut off. Salt was an important item on the dinner table of a king. It was always placed in front of the king when he sat down to eat. Important guests at the king’s table were seated near the salt. Less important guests were given seats farther away from it.

14. What is the passage’s main idea?
A.Thousands of people were punished because of salt B.The uses and importance of salt in history.
C.Salt was important in history.
D.Nobody knows when salt began to be used.

The first thing people see, in the morning, when they walk outside is the sky or the colored sun. Is this world giving us the privilege of seeing the natural colors of the sun through all the layers of pollution within the air? Not only are beautiful sights such as this hidden behind the pollution this world causes everyday, but an increase in diseases, infections and death occurs. What causes pollution? What can we do to prevent it, and get rid of it? Is it fair to the children of the future to have to suffer the consequences that pollution causes? Why not take care of the problem now? Factory and business owners have the ability to prevent air pollution. Air pollution is the presence in the atmosphere of harmful gases, liquids, or solids. Air pollution, known as smoke pollution for many years, resulted from coal combustion. smog has been a problem in coal-burning areas for several centuries. smog finally decreased when coal combustion was replaced by oil and gas combustion. Air pollution is caused by a number of different types of pollutants. The first type, particulate matter, consists of solid and liquid aerosols suspended in the atmosphere. These arise from the burning of coal and from industrial processes. Atmospheric particles can scatter and absorb stmlight which reduces visibility. Particles also reduce visibility by attenuating the light from objects and illuminating the air causing the contrast between the objects and their backgrounds to reduce. Not only does it effect visibility, but it hastens the erosion of building materials and the corrosion of metals, interferes with the human respiratory system, and brings toxic materials into the body. The small particles cause chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, emphysema and lung cancer. The second type is sulfur oxides which come from the burning of coal and industrial processes. Damage to materials, to vegetation, and to the human respiratory system are caused by the acid nature of oxides. small quantities of sulfur oxides can increase illness and mortality. The third type of pollutant is carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas against which humans have no protection. Carbon monoxide comes from the exhaust of gasoline-powered vehicles and secondarily from industrial processes.
18. What is the first thing that people ought to do in face of pollution, according to the author?

PART V READING COMPREHENSION (25 MIN)Directions: In this section there are four passages followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that you think is the best answer.
“Oh, I’m Just a Housewife” After watching my mother deal with our family of five, I can’t understand why her answer to the question, “What do you do?” is always,”Oh, I’m just a housewife.” JUST a housewife? Anyone who spends most of her time in meal preparation and cleanup, washing and drying clothes, keeping the house clean, leading a scout troop, playing taxi driver to us kids when it’s time for school, music lessons or the dentist, doing volunteer work for her favorite charity, and making sure that all our family needs are met is not JUST a housewife. She’s the real Wonder Woman. Why is it that so many mothers like mine think of themselves as second-class or some thing similar? Where has this notion come from? Have we
males made them feel this way? Has our society made “going to work” outside the home seem more important than what a housewife must face each day?I would be very curious to see what would happen if a housewife went on strike. Dishes would pile up. Food in the house would run out. No meals would appear on the table. There would be no clean clothes when needed. High boots would be required just to make it through the house scattered with garbage. Walking and bus riding would increase. Those scout troops would have to break up. Charities would suffer. I doubt if the man of the house would be able to take over. Oh, he might start out with the attitude that he can do just as good a job, but how long would that last? Not long, once he had to come home each night after work to more household duties. There would be no more coming home to a prepared meal; he’d have to fix it himself. The kids would all be screaming for something to eat, clean clothes and more bus fare money. Once he quieted the kids, he’d have to clean the house, go shopping, make sure that kids got a bath, and fix lunches for the next day. Once the kids were down for the night, he might be able to crawl into an unmade bed and try to read the morning newspaper. No, I don’t think many males are going to volunteer for the job. I know I don’t want it. So, thanks, mom! I’ll do what I can to create a national holiday for housewives. It could be appropriately called Wonder Woman Day.
82. The main idea of the passage is about_____________. A.housewives, the wonder women

85. In the author’s opinion,________________.
A.many males are going to volunteer for housewives’ work
B.housewives deserve a national holiday named Wonder Woman Day C.the man of the house would be able to take over the housewives’ work D.housewives are second-class citizens or something similar
For a long time, researchers have tried to nail down just what shapes us--or what, at least, shapes us most. And over the years, they’ve had a lot of exclamation moments. First it was our parents, particularly our mothers. Then it was our genes. Next it was our peers, who show up last but hold great sway. And all those ideas were good ones—but only as far as they went. Somewhere, there was a sort of temperamental dark matter exerting an invisible gravitational pull of its own. More and more, scientists are concluding that this unexplained force is our siblings. From the time we are born, our brothers and sisters are our collaborators and co-conspirators, our role models and cautionary tales. They are our scolds, protectors, goads, tormentors, playmates, counselors, sources of envy, objects of pride. They teach us how to resolve conflicts and how not to; how to conduct friendships and when to walk away from them. Sisters teach brothers about the mysteries of girls; brothers teach sisters about the puzzle of boys. Our spouses arrive comparatively late in our lives; our parents eventually leave us. Our siblings may be the only people we’ll ever know who truly qualify as partners for life. “Siblings,” says family sociologist Katherine Conger, “are with us for the whole journey.” Within the scientific community, siblings have not been wholly ignored, but research has been limited mostly to discussions of birth order. Older sibs were said to be strivers; younger ones rebels; middle kids the lost souls. The stereotypes were broad, if not entirely untrue, and there the discussion mostly ended. But all that’s changing. At research centers in the U.S., Canada, Europe and elsewhere, investigators are launching a wealth of new studies into the sibling dynamic, looking at ways brothers and sisters steer one another into—or away from—risky behavior, how they form a protective buffer (减震器) against family upheaval; how they educate one another about the opposite sex; how all siblings compete for family recognition and come to
terms—or blows—over such impossibly charged issues as parental favoritism. From that research, scientists are gaining intriguing insights into the people we become as adults. Does the manager who runs a harmonious office call on the peacemaking skills learned in the family playroom? Does the student struggling with a professor who plays favorites summon up the coping skills acquired from dealing with a sister who was Daddy’s girl? Do husbands and wives benefit from the inter-gender negotiations they waged when their most important partners were their sisters and brothers? All that is under investigation. “Siblings have just been off the radar screen until now,” says Conger. But today serious work is revealing exactly how
our brothers and sisters influence us.
86. The beginning of the passage indicates that A.researchers have found out what shapes us. B.our peer is the last factor influencing us.
C.what researchers found contributes in a limited way. D.what researchers found is good and trustworthy.
87. In the third paragraph, the author tries to demonstrate that our siblings A.offer us much useful information. B.have great influences on us.
C.are the ones who love us completely. D.accompany us throughout our life.
88. In scientific community, previous research on siblings A.mostly focused on the sibling order. B.studied the characteristics of the kids. C.studied the matter in a broad sense.
D.wasn’t believable and the discussion ended.
89. Which of the following is NOT sibling dynamic? A.A brother cautions his sister against getting into trouble. B.Sisters have quarrels with each other.
C.Siblings compete for parental favoritism. D.Older kids in a family try hard to achieve.
A、B对应steer away from risky behavior;C在该段提及,也属sibling dynamic。
90. From the last paragraph, we can conclude that
A.managers learned management skills from the family playroom. B.spouses learned negotiation skills from their siblings. C.studies on siblings are under the way.
D.studies on siblings need thorough investigation.
All that is under investigation,C与此同义,为正确答案。
1 I am one of the many city people who are always saying that given the choice we would prefer to live in the country away from the dirt and noise of a large city. I have managed to convince myself that if it weren’t for my job I would immediately head out for the open spaces and go back to nature in some sleepy village buried in the country. But how realistic is the dream?2 Cities can be frightening places. The majority of the population live in massive tower blocks, noisy, dirty and impersonal. The sense of belonging to a community tends to disappear when you live fifteen floors up. All you can see from your window is sky, or other blocks of flats. Children become aggressive and nervous -- cooped up at home all day, with nowhere to play; their mothers feel isolated from the rest of the world. Strangely enough, whereas in the past the inhabitants of one street all knew each other, nowadays people on the same floor in tower blocks don’t even say hello to each other.3 Country life, on the other hand, differs from this kind of isolated existence in that a sense of community generally binds the inhabitants of small villages together. People have the advantage of knowing that there is always someone to turn to when they need help. But country life has disadvantages too. While it is true that you may be among friends in a village, it is also true that you are cut off from the exciting and important events that take place in cities. There’s little possibility of going to a new show or the latest movie. Shopping becomes a major problem, and for anything slightly out of the ordinary you have to go on an expedition to the nearest large town. The city-dweller who leaves for the country is oftenoppressed by a sense of unbearable stillness and quiet.4 What, then, is the answer? The country has the advantage of peace and quiet, but suffers from the disadvantage of being cut off; the city breeds a feeling of isolation, and constant noise batters the senses. But one of its main advantages is that you are at the centre of things, and that life doesn’t come to an
end at half-past nine at night. Some people have found (or rather bought) a compromise between the two: they have expressed theirpreference for the “quiet life” by leaving the suburbs and moving to villages within commuting distance of large cities. They generally have about as much sensitivity as the plastic flowers they leave behind -- they are polluted with strange ideas about change and improvement which they force on to the unwilling original inhabitants of the villages.5 What then of my dreams of leaning on a cottage gate and murmuring “morning” to the locals as they pass by? I’m keen on the idea, but you see there’s my cat, Toby. I’m not at all sure that he would take to all that fresh air and exercise in the long grass. I mean, can you see him mixing with all those hearty males down the farm? No, he would rather have the electric imitation-coal fire any evening.
91. We get the impression from the first paragraph that the author______. A.used to live in the country. B.used to work in the city. C.works in the city. D.lives in the country.
92. In the author’s opinion, the following may cause city people to be unhappy EXCEPT______.
A.a strong sense of fear. B.lack of communication. C.housing conditions. D.a sense of isolation.
93. The passage implies that it is easy to buy the following things in the country EXCEPT______.
A.daily necessities. B.fresh fruits.
C.designer clothes. D.fresh vegetables.
94. According to the passage, which of the following adjectives best describes those people who work in large cities and live in villages?
A.Original. B.Quiet. C.Arrogant. D.Insensitive.
95. Do you think the author will move to the country? A.Yes, he will do so. B.No, he will not do so. C.It is difficult to tell. D.He is in two minds.
The History of the Atomic Bomb On August 2, 1939, just before the beginning of World War II, Albert Einstein wrote to then President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Einstein and several other scientists told Roosevelt of efforts in Nazi Germany to purify uranium-235, which could be used to build an atomic bomb. It was shortly thereafter that the United States Government began the serious undertaking known then only as “The Manhattan Project”. Simply put, the Manhattan Project was committed to expediting research that would produce a viable atomic bomb. The most complicated issue to be addressed in making of an atomic bomb was the production of ample amounts of “enriched” uranium to sustain a chain reaction. At the time, uranium-235 was very hard to extract. In fact, the ratio of conversion from uranium ore to uranium metal is 500:1. Compounding this, the one part of uranium that is finally refined from the ore is over 99% uranium-238, which is practically useless for an atomic bomb. To make the task even more difficult, the useful U-235 and nearly uselessU-238 are isotopes(同位素), nearly identical in their chemical makeup. No ordinary chemical extraction method could separate them; only mechanical methods could work. A massive enrichment laboratory/plant was constructed at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Harold C. Urey and his colleagues at Columbia University devised an extraction system that worked on the principle of gaseous
diffusion, and Ernest O. Lawrence (inventor of the Cyclotron) at the University of California in Berkeley implemented a process involving magnetic separation of the two isotopes. Next, a gas centrifuge was used to further separate the lighter U-235 from the heavier, non-fissionable U-238. Once all of these procedures had been completed, all that needed to be done was to put to the test the entire concept behind atomic fission (“splitting the atom”, in layman’s terms). Over the course of six years, from 1939 to 1945, more than $2 billion was spent during the history of the Manhattan Project. The formulas for refining uranium and putting together a working atomic bomb were created and seen to their logical ends by some of the greatest minds of our time. Chief among the people who unleashed the power of the atom was J. Robert Oppenheimer, who oversaw the project from conception to completion. Finally, the day came when all at Los Alamos would find out if “The Gadget” (code-named as such during its development) was going to be the colossal dud of the century or perhaps an end to the war. It all came down to a fateful morning in midsummer, 1945.
96. Which of the following is the least possible reason for the launching of the Manhattan Project?
A.Franklin D. Roosevelt. B.Nazi Germany.
C.Albert Einstein and other scientists. D.The Second World War.
It was shortly thereafter that the United States Government began the serious undertaking。
97. Which of the following did NOT cause so much trouble for the making of an atomic bomb?
A.Extraction of uranium. B.Sustentation of a reaction.
C.Conversion from uranium ore to uranium metal. D.Separation of 1 U-235 and U-238.
而且应该是一系列的反应:to sustain a chain reaction。
98. Which of the following does NOT help to separate the useful U-235 and nearly useless U-238?
A.The principle of gaseous diffusion.
B.A process involving magnetic separation of the two isotopes.
C.A process nearly identical in the chemical makeup. D.A gas centrifuge.
99. Who has been working at the making of the atomic bomb from beginning to end’?
A.Albert Einstein. B.Harold C. Urey. C.Ernest O. Lawrence. D.J. Robert Oppenheimer.
J.Robert Oppenheimer who oversaw the project from conception to completion。
100. According to the passage, if there were 500 tons of uranium ore, how many tons of useful uranium-235 could be extracted?
A.1 kilogram. B.10 kilogram. C.50 kilogram. D.500 kilogram.

Dangers of New Farming Technology Blessed by the rapid development of modem technology, people now would be able to enjoy a larger variety of cheap food. Unfortunately, the improved methods have brought great benefits as well as risks that may threaten human health and society. Firstly, the safety of fertilized crops, vegetables and fruits is highly doubted. Admittedly, the adoption of fertilizers dramatically increased productivity and to some extent resolve the problem of starvation. However, a recent study has found such diseases as cancer and mental disorder had much to do with fertilizers used in farming. Similarly, pesticides on vegetables or fruits can hardly be removed completely and the residues become toxic to human body. These advanced methods also produced adverse impact on our living environment. Consumption of fuels and emission of gases by the farming machines may pollute the once clean and fresh air of countryside. Fertilizers could probably penetrate into soil, destroy microbe, and even change texture of it, which is by no means beneficial to soil conservation or the sustaining of ecological system. Besides, with machinery releasing people from burden of traditional manual work .and labor, country residents swarm into city to pursue better career development, which makes the already tight employment situation even worse. Furthermore, the increasingly large population in the city could lead to other social problems such as housing, traffic, medical care, education, and etc. To conclude, despite the progressive aspect of improved fertilizer and better machinery, we must be fully aware of the potential dangers produced, and make effort to eliminate the side effects so that the technology could serve human better.
