Growing up in America the son of Indian parents, I never felt truly American or Indian. I spoke Hindi at home, but was ecated in English so I had difficulty with both languages; being fluent in spoken Hindi, but unable to write it, and being able to write in English, but hesitant to speak it. I felt like an outsider, not fully embraced by either culture and so left to drift in this netherworld between the two. As I grew up though and learned to appreciate the uniqueness of my mixed cultural influences, I have been able to turn a situation that once made me shy and awkward into a wonderful asset. Not many people can straddle two different cultures and appreciate the positives of both. Through much hard work in college I have learned to write in Hindi, and also through personal effort I have become accustomed to speaking in English and consider it almost my native language. I now hope to put these skills to use in my future career by helping to revolutionize the Indian legal system which is so in need of updating.
I have always been a dedicated student--as evidenced by my transcripts--and because of my ability to pay close attention to small details and affinity for precision, I went into accounting. While I have been successful in this capacity since graating, I have not found it fulfilling in the long term and have been moonlighting as a research assistant for a law professor in India, where I have found my true passion. I find the law, and particularly international legal systems, fascinating and I hope to study them in depth while in law school. While I have visited India many times since early childhood, I didn’t really have any true grasp of its legal systems or business climate prior to doing this work. What I have found is that India is ripe for change, but it is going to take a lot of hard work from dedicated people with western ecations to get it on its feet, and this includes people with legal training. India is a developing economy, and its people are very hard working, it just doesn’t have the kind of legal structure necessary to protect its workers and business and it will never be a major world economy until those structures are in place.
I know that a system similar to that in the U.S. would go far in bringing India into the 21st century, and in order to make myself a useful player in bringing that about I must expand my own skill set by earning a legal degree at ____ University. I will bring with me my dedication, passion, and bi-cultural background to the student body, and of course do my best to succeed academically.
